The Empty Quarters or A’Rub A’Khali is like no other. This great desert, of barren land, which is inhospitable and harsh, grips you in a way words can not describe or do justice, the silence, the emptiness, the soft sands, even the mirages leaves an impression on your mind like a tattoo which will last. forever. Nothing is welcoming, but you still yearn to go back to it. Only those few who have been deep inside will understand this privilege.

We headed to Ubar, the lost city of Irem of the pillars, which was mentioned in the Quran, One Thousand and One Nights, The Atlantis of the Sands and in many other places. The City had 1,000 pillars at its might between 3000 B.C. to 100 A.D. but their people went against god's word and the prophet Hud/Hood in the Quran, or Eber/Heber in the bible, so a large storm covered the city and it was lost forever…
The place was discovered using satellite scanners, from the sky and one from the ground. The one from the ground scanned upto a meter under ground while the top one zeroed in on the location after a few years of germen and British searching the place.
Ubar was discovered in the early 90's, however, they are not 100% sure it is Ubar since they do not have all the evidence to support its Ubar and the Saudis also claim they have their own Ubar (the Saudis claim everything is theirs anyway).
Sadly the Shsur, in Omani, is very badly maintained and not organized at all. There are a few signs but no explanation or guide to tell you much, just some bedu chilling around the little village of 70 inhabitants.
Its really not worth going to check Ubar out.
Ubar style toilet
Even in the middle of nowhere a satellite dish is needed to survive the harsh conditions!
